Product Development Costs Positively Impacted by 3D Printing
Hear straight from the engineer about the real world impact of a 3D printer on product development costs. Mark Huebner and 3DP Development Engineer, Joe Binka, discuss 3D Printing’s impact on product development cost. There is really no comparison in costs between the old way and the new way of 3D printing. What we can do with a 3D printer is create our own bracketry for the tool room or production environment. With the previous process, we just would not be able to compete cost wise. A good example of that is this bracket. Initially, when they were working on the design, their goal was to send this bracket out to the tool room to be created. This would have taken the tool room guy 2 days at 50 dollars an hour. Now, they design it in the CAD system, put it on the 3D printer, and in three hours they have a bracket. Also, it’s only about three dollars’ worth of plastic, so the cost factor is a huge advantage in both areas.
