Joe’s Corner #3 – My Flavor of the Month (Material)
I have some bad news for all of you… From next week forward Joe’s Corner is going VLOG (Video Blog)! I apologize in advance, I certainly have a face for text.:)
In all seriousness, I think this will be a good way to give you an inside look at our factory as well as some hands-on problem-solving. This will be my first time doing anything like this, so I hope you enjoy it.
This week I want to talk briefly about my Flavor of the Month (material).
High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
Check out this video first:
HIPS or High Impact Polystyrene is best known as a support material, but I have recently been using it for end use parts. My top features include:
• Low warp
• High Temperature
• Easy post finishing
This is always important with large parts. I especially like using it for large flat plates such as shadow boards.
I’m printing at 240C – 250C with a bed temperature of 120C. This is very similar to ABS and it is very strong.
All you need to do is hit this material with some 400 grit sandpaper to know what I’m talking about.
It’s as close to ABS as I have ever seen. A pleasure to work with post print.
Please, go out and grab a roll and give it a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
Until next week!
