Beyond Big Benchy – Large Format 3D Printing
This new benchy printed by 3D Platform goes beyond large format printing! This HUGE benchy was printed on 3D Platform’s 400 series machine with a HFE300. It was printed out of PLA with a 2mm nozzle, 1mm layer height, 10% infill, 3 bottom layers, 6 top layers, 1 perimeter, and a print speed of 32mm/s.
The print took 7 and a half spools to complete. Each color change is one complete spool. The engineers went through one full spool in about 7 hours. Altogether, this sizable benchy took about 48 hours of total print time. The print weighs in at about 38lb or 17.24KG.
The only problem area the team encountered was the overhangs. This is a common issue when printing benchys, especially with large format. So, for something in such an EXTRA large format, the engineers had to watch closely to not let the overhang issue derail the entire print process. To avoid print failure due to the overhangs and bridging, they use more cooling to utilize the settings in Simplify3D and adjust the bridge/overhang speed as well as extrusion multiplier. In the pink area you can see some gaps in the perimeter due to the pink filament being an older spool, but it was nothing that really stands out to the naked eye. It’s always best to print with fresh filament!
