3D Printing Tips: How to Level the Build Area

Achieving and maintaining a level print bed on your large format 3D printer, the 3DP1000, is critical for high-quality prints and reliable printing results. The 3DP1000 build area is leveled and calibrated at the factory. However, small adjustments may be needed periodically. In this blog, we are going to walk you through the process of leveling the build area.

3DP1000 Build Area Leveling

Step 1: Print the bed leveling file

The 3D Platform team has created a bed leveling file that is optimized for testing the large build area of the 3DP1000 in a short amount of time. Locate the gcode file on SD Card that comes with your 3DP1000, or download it here:

  • Prepare your bed with beer or other solution to promote bed adhesion, pre-heat the build area to 70°C, turn the nozzle temperature to 200°C.
  • On the LCD Screen, Select Prepare > Auto Home. Make sure the XYZ axes are in the home position.
  • Go to the main menu, select Print from SD > Select file “bed-level-test.gcode” (Or your desired test file).

Step 2: Make Adjustments During Printing

Watch the first few layers closely and look for consistency in the filament beads. The filament should be smooth and even in all locations on the bed, and have no adhesion issues. If you notice any inconsistencies, follow the steps below, and make adjustments while the print is running for immediate feedback.

Symptom Checker:

        –  The filament bead seems round

        –  Visible space between filament beads

        –  Filament is not adhering to the bed

The Cause:

The build area is too low, or the nozzle is too far from the build area

The Solution: Raise the build area.

        1.  Locate one of the eight adjustment points nearest to the problem area

        2.  Unlock the button head screw (silver) by turning counterclockwise

        3.  Raise the build area by turning the socket cap screw (black) 90 degrees clockwise

        4.  Lock the button head screw (silver) by turning clockwise

        5.  Watch the consistency of following layers, repeat if necessary

Symptom Checker:

  • The filament bead is very thin and uneven
  • The filament bead is wide and flat
  • The extruder is bumping or cogging

The Cause:

The build area is too high, or the nozzle is too close to the build area

The Solution: Lower the build area.

       1. Locate one of the eight adjustment points nearest to the problem area

       2. Unlock the button head screw (silver) by turning counterclockwise

       3. Lower the build area by turning the socket cap screw (black) 90 degrees counterclockwise

       4. Lock the button head screw (silver) by turning clockwise

       5. Watch the consistency of following layers, repeat if necessary

The 3D Platform bed leveling test will print 10 perimeters around the build area, this takes about 8 to 10 minutes to complete. Make adjustments while the print is running, once finished adjusting, the filament beads should look consistent and adhere to the bed.
