CAD Trend #1: Virtual Reality
Virtual Reality (VR) has been very popular among gamers for the past several years. It recenlty has found its way into media, education and training, architectural and urban design, therapy, concerts, and design engineering – more specifically, computer-aided design (CAD).
CAD allows engineers to automate and document their design process, but is limited when applied to real-world environments. To bring VR to CAD will allow engineers to pick apart the pieces of their designs and break them down to their individual components.
Business Advantage reports that the usage of VR with CAD has increased from 3% to 5% in the last year. It is predicted to grow “60% this year (from 5% to 8% usage) and 140% within 5 years (from 5% to 12% usage) – by 2020.”

CAD Trend #2: Cloud Based CAD
describes cloud technology as the enabling force that allows CAD users to become mobile only. It provides a single source of data that allows engineers to reference during the construction of a huge project; for example, development of a tall building.
With cloud based CAD, data synchronization and project visualization can be successful. There are a few concerns involving data security. Some professionals in AEC and manufacturing are hesitant to share designs and intellectual property over the cloud in fear of they will be hijacked by hackers.
Business Advantage reports that around 19% of CAD users will be using cloud based CAD, with a predicted increase of 29% in the next 3 to 5 years.
CAD Trend #3: 3D Printing
3D printing’s popularity is growing across industries for its benefits of design improvements, decreased design times and costs, and faster response times to market. Its growing popularity creates a need for ‘direct printing
’ options. options would eliminate the in-between tools needed to prepare files or help optimize them for printing.
Other CAD players are developing certain features through the cloud based infrastructure that allows more open software development architecture among third parties.
